wilderness areas. The WFA is a great introduction to wilderness medicine and

treatment of environmental illnesses, recognizing and stabilizing life threats
caused by trauma, and calling for a rescue in the event of a wilderness

Wilderness First Responder - Hybrid Course

This Hybrid Wilderness First Responder (HWFR) Course format consists of a 30 hour self-paced, online instructional component, followed by a 50-hour in-person practical component.  The in-person session takes place over five consecutive days.

The online section is hosted on CANVAS®, a cloud-based classroom and powerful learning management system that allows students to work at their own pace. An instructor team assigned to each course supports participants with navigation of the online material and facilitates the in-person interactive elements and skill-based learning. The online material consists of reading assignments, case studies, videos, photos, animations, quizzes, and discussions. The online section is available to course participants approximately 1 month before the practical section is to begin.

The hybrid format works best for self-motivated individuals with good time management skills and has access to a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop and high-speed internet. This instructional format provides the opportunity for course participants to learn at their own speed, in their own space, on their own schedule.

Participants then apply knowledge and skills learned from the online WFR modules to the 50 hour in-person section.  This practical section consists of focused lectures, hands-on patient assessments, skill stations, scenarios, and discussions with the same instructor team that supports the online section.

Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is recognized as the industry standard for those who work as backcountry trip leaders, camp counselors, mountain guides, river guides, ski patrollers and other outdoor professionals responsible for prolonged field care of their clients and friends. This 16-hour module is designed for anyone re-certifying their current WFR certification. Content delivery is built around hands-on practical skills, scenarios, simulations and case reviews.

Topics include, but are not limited to: CPR considerations (when not to start and when to stop), wilderness wound and burn management, assessing patients for spine and head trauma, athletic injuries, addressing fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, patient monitoring and long-term management problems, up-to-date information on all environmental emergencies, common simple medical problems, plus advice on drug therapies. Emphasis is placed on prevention and decision-making.

All curriculum is based on current industry standards set forth by the WMEC

This 160 hour EMT course, developed and provided by Jackson Hole Outdoor Leadership Institute (JHOLI), is compliant with DOT EMT curriculum and prepares individuals to provide pre-hospital emergency medical care and transportation for the sick and injured.  Topics covered include, but are not limited to, Basic Life Support Skills (CPR, AED use, airway management, oxygen administration), patient assessment, recognition and treatment of medical emergencies, recognition and treatment of traumatic emergencies, pharmacology, proper techniques in lifting and moving patients, accurate documentation and effective communication.

This course will include a blend of classroom instruction, hands-on lab time for practical skills development, mock scenarios, quizzes, tests, clinical observations and ambulance ride alongs.

Upon successful completion of the course and all exams, participants obtain the following:

This WEMT course, developed and provided by Jackson Hole Outdoor Leadership Institute (JHOLI), consists of the standard DOT EMT curriculum and the principles of Wilderness Medicine integrated into a month-long, 240-hour training. This course includes all the information in the Wilderness First Responder curriculum and expands each topic in anatomy, physiology, recognition and treatment, and the extended care principles and protocols as outlined by the DOT EMT curriculum.

It is an intense, in-depth program designed for people who work, or plan to work, as professional mountain guides, outdoor leaders, professional pre-hospital medical personnel on fire departments, search and rescue squads, and ambulance crews, especially those working far from definitive care (e.g. on rural or wilderness rescue teams).

Learning takes place in the classroom, outdoor settings, ambulance ride-alongs and clinical observations. Classroom learning, practical skills development, mock scenarios, quizzes, tests, clinical observations and ambulance ride-alongs are all critical components of the course and students’ success.

This program investigates how Wilderness Medicine is practiced and how patients are treated at the professional level by guides and outdoor leaders, transferred to and treated by organized SAR, transitioned to Urban EMS and finally to definitive care/Emergency Room facilities.  Students will complete a 3 week DOT compliant Urban EMT module, followed by a 5 day Hybrid WFR module in which students adapt for remote and austere environments and explore the adaptations of wilderness medicine protocols.

Upon successful completion of the course and all exams, participants obtain the following:

-  3 year DMM WEMT certification

-  2 year DMM WAT (Wilderness Anaphylaxis Training)

-  2 year AHA BLS Provider certification
